Voguing and ballroom culture became popular in New York in the mid-1980s. They have been directly linked to anti-racism and the fight for LGBTI rights since the very beginning. At present, they are experiencing a new, worldwide revival, and for six years Madrid has boasted a scene that has grown bit by bit, courtesy of people like Silvi ManneQueen (better known as Mother Spain) who have created safe, meaningful havens where a distinct self-image can be constructed through dance.
Veranos de la Villa has invited all of the Spanish “houses” to a ball –the term used for the community’s gatherings– where, along with the conventional competitive categories, there will also be others that revolve around tradition and the city, reinventing the conventional imaginary and placing it at the service of this subculture to aid its own reinterpretation. The night will be one of empowerment and cultural resilience, realised through stylised poses and a whole lot of attitude.
