Tribute to Marvin Gaye

Fight for your rights

2021 marks the 50th anniversary of an album that changed the course of popular music history: What’s Going On, by Marvin Gaye, which was chosen as the greatest album of all time by Rolling Stone magazine.

The American musician captured the feelings of rage and violence that were palpable in the streets of the USA and transformed them into a masterpiece that has stood the test of time and remains utterly relevant. His album is now studied in universities for its influential, important message and for what it means to the pop music universe today. What’s Going On is an initial point of reference for many artists who want to use music to call for social justice.

Now, well into the 21st century, we want to champion music as culture, which helps to strengthen identities, support diversity and encourage civic engagement. Since Madrid is one of the cities with the most prominent black music scenes in Europe, with first-rate musicians to rival those of any other country, we’re paying tribute to this album with a super band of musicians who have earned their stripes in jam sessions all over the city. We will also welcome guest artists like Aurora (Aurora & The Betrayers), Deborah Ayo (Freedonia), Iñigo Bregel (Los Estanques), Igor Pascual (Loquillo) and Germán Salto, who will join us in this great big celebration of globally influential black music.
