In 1845, when Instituto San Isidro took over part of the buildings which at the time housed the schools Colegio Imperial and Reales Estudios de San Isidro, it became Spain’s oldest school. It is also, however, a key institution in Madrid. The incredibly extensive list of alumni who have passed through its Cloister of the Well is a living testimony to Madrid’s history and cultural legacy. Among them is Lope de Vega, who wrote El animal de Hungría, which will be presented by Colectivo Állatok / Escénate.

An appreciation for Spanish Golden Age theatre is what inspired these young actors to launch this project with Ernesto Arias, who has caught their infectious enthusiasm for acquiring knowledge while working with verse. El animal de Hungría is a play that's never been staged, which means they could give their imaginations free reign with regard to its mise-en-scène. They bring us a tremendously poetic script that also has a strong element of comedy and a fascinating plot that earns it a place among Lope de Vega's most representative plays: it's full of humour, conspiracies, betrayal, violence and poetry, and is centred around the “myth of the savage”.
