THE HISTORY OF KOREAN WESTERN THEATRE

Jaha Koo

The History of Korean Western Theatre

Jaha Koo (born in 1984) is a South Korean performing arts creator and composer. His artistic practice moves between performance and multimedia, and all of his pieces include their own videos, texts, installations and music. His performances establish a concrete connection between history, politics and his own biography. Since 2014, he has been working on Hamartia, a trilogy about South Korea’s political history and how those events still affect people's lives today.

Veranos de la Villa will be presenting the final production in the trilogy –preceded by Lolling & Rolling and Cuckoo–, in which Koo questions why Korean theatre is largely subject to the Western canon, while also reflecting on tradition, self-censorship and authenticity. The History of Korean Western Theatre is a documentary theatre production about the future, in which Koo weaves together personal stories and historic, political and sociological events on stage, topics which often illustrate the culture clash between East and West: from changing your physical features in order to triumph in the West to the great personal cost of Western interference at the macroeconomic level.
