MEMENTO is a project that builds community narratives by means of the bodies that inhabit the city of Madrid and their tattoos. For Veranos de la Villa, the group has put together a transmedia installation in the Vaulted Room that gives visibility to some of these processes and invites us to reflect on the construction of identity based on the collective memory and tattoos.

Tattoos are tangible memories: memories etched into the skin. Tattooed bodies are bodies that are scarred and designed, the result of a collective imaginary enmeshed in particular social and cultural dynamics, in specific times and places. The tattoo is defined as an instrument of resistance to contemporary impermanence; the crystallisation of emotional impulses; a political territory that creates tools for interpreting the communities it is part of.

Tattoos become narrative layers or devices that hold information on the past experiences, future prospects, desires and fears that make us who we are. When we speak of a community's identity, memory or emotions, they tend towards the infinite if we consider all of the individual identities, memories and emotions that comprise the collective whole. Communities are made up of networks of skin that create identity based on the diverse nature of bodies and emotions.

This overview is a temporal experience built collectively through interaction with and active listening to the public. It’s a look into the past, an encounter with the present and a proposal for the future through the lens of the tattoos that make up Madrid’s emotional archive.
