¡Sereno!… ábreme la Zarzuela

A contemporary comic sketch in one act and two scenes…

¡Sereno!… ábreme la Zarzuela

Enrique Viana and Miguel Huertas

The sereno, the night watchman, an essential character in the sainetes or farces of Spain’s lyrical theatre, bursts into a public square at dawn to encounter an audience who want him to open the door... But what door? The door that Madrid dedicated to Zarzuela.

A show for all audiences that uses elegant humour and constant irony to bring us closer to the city’s streets, their “lights” and “shadows”, their “characters”. Ballads and musical fantasies follow one after the other in an interaction with the audience, who will choose, from among the fragments suggested by the sereno, which one they want to listen to when night falls on the squares of Madrid.

Enrique Viana and Miguel Huertas, a tenor and a pianist respectively, interpret fragments of music by Moreno Torroba, Sorozábal, Alonso, Serrano, Moraleda, Bretón... Ballads, cuplés (music-hall songs), fantasies and allusive songs illustrate a Zarzuela that will open its heart to the Madrid night thanks to the sereno’s magical key.
