“I think table and say chair / I buy bread and leave it behind / What I learn, I forget / What's happening is, I love you”, sings Juan Valderrama in Spanish, setting this poem by Gloria Fuertes to music. In Mujeres de carne y verso he draws on two decades of experience as a singer to pay tribute to this poet with a universal appeal, in addition to other female creators.
The show puts the spotlight on poets from all eras, from Sappho to contemporary poet Elvira Sastre, including Nobel laureate Gabriela Mistral, Alfonsina Storni and Sor Juana Inés de la Cruz, as well as other women who had been largely forgotten, such as Gloria de la Prada and Ángela Figuera Aymerich. Juan Valderrama champions the female writers who played a leading role in raising awareness of women as intellectual creators.
Sounds, rhythms and melodies like fado, bolero and flamenco are woven together, transforming their verses into exquisite musical works that are sung in their original languages. Juan Valderrama won’t be alone on stage. Accompanying him will be a cast of fabulous female instrumentalists as well as some female guest artists, including Rozalén, Las Migas and María Toledo.
