Ruiseñora + Antía Muíño
For quite a few years now, a new batch of musicians has set out to revive the sounds of Iberian roots music to (re)compose overwhelmingly contemporary melodies, asserting tradition through electronic and rock music. Such is the case of the names featured in tonight’s Veranos de la Villa festival show at the Claustro del Pozo of the San Isidro Secondary School.
With only a couple of singles to her name, Antía Muíño became one of the revelations of Galicia’s nova canción (new song) movement in 2020. A jazz-pop artist, a singer and writer of alternative songs and a lover of traditional Galician music, she’ll be bringing to the Festival her debut album Open Letter (Carta Aberta), which has echoes of Norah Jones, Sílvia Pérez Cruz, Fiona Apple, Luz Casal, Corinne Bailey Rae, Tracy Chapman or Diana Krall, but which mainly sounds very much like her own.
As far as Ruiseñora is concerned, they’ll be bringing to the Veranos de la Villa festival their new album, Palm Tree, Palm Tree (Palmerita, Palmerita), an album in which the duo draws together the cultural traditions of Extremadura and the Canary Islands (which is where they both hail from, although they have been living in Madrid for some time) from an imaginary in which traditional music such as the Extremaduran copla or the Canary Island folía enter into a direct dialogue with totally cosmic electronic music and popular psychedelia, without forgetting to give a nod and a wink in their new songs to nineties rave culture or industrial rock.
