Eliades Ochoa – Star of Buena Vista Social Club
Cuban Music
Born in 1946 in Songo la Maya, near Santiago de Cuba, Eliades Ochoa will go down in history as one of the great singers of son cubano music. A key musician in the phenomenon that was Buena Vista Social Club, he is a first-rate guitarist who has always remained faithful to the roots of traditional music. Ever since he rose to international fame in 1997, his figure and myriad talents have been called upon by such artists as C. Tangana for his album El Madrileño - he co-wrote, played and sang on the song Dying of Envy (Muriendo de envidia), and Manu Dibango, Ry Cooder, Bunbury or Toumani Diabate
Ochoa is now visiting Madrid to present his latest album, Guajiro, which features collaborations by the likes of blues harmonica player Charlie Musselwhite, Fania All-Stars legend Rubén Blades and Joan Wasser, better known perhaps by her stage name, Joan As Police Woman. An album in which he shows once again that he has a unique voice and very much his own style and sound, deeply rooted in traditional Cuban music and with an appeal as timeless as it is universal.
