La corte de Faraón, a zarzuela referred to as a “biblical operetta in one act and five scenes", premiered in Madrid at Teatro Eslava on 21 January 1910, with a libretto by Guillermo Perrín and Miguel de Palacios and music by Vicente Lleó. It was staged at that theatre over 700 times, becoming one of the five most frequently performed zarzuelas in history.
It has been staged continuously since its premiere, sometimes clandestinely, as it was banned under Franco's dictatorship due to its erotic and irreverent tone. Since democracy was established, it has been performed in multiple theatres, both professional and amateur. Without a doubt, along with La verbena de la Paloma it is the zarzuela that the general public is most familiar with, even people who know next to nothing about this musical genre.
Veranos de la Villa will revisit Spain’s most traditional genre with a programme that offers a new adaptation which premiered at the 2019 Mérida Classical Theatre Festival, reworked into a 21st century-style production that draws heavily on the format of musicals and modern revues.
A production by the Mérida Classical Theatre Festival and El Negrito Producciones.
